The VW T-Cross is a Polo-sized convertible SUV

This is the T-Cross Breeze – Volkswagen's Polo-sized convertible front-wheel drive SUV, revealed today at the Geneva Motor Show.

For now little more than a concept, VW’s head of design Klaus Bischoff says the Breeze is a “teaser for the most compact sport utility vehicle that Volkswagen plans to make," as well as being "the nucleus of a new SUV and convertible design". So the soft top isn't just for Geneva...

Volkswagen is getting into SUVs big time. In the coming years there’s to be a long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan (though not for us Brits), plus a new mid-size SUV for the Americans and Chinese. And now that the Tiguan has swelled a size, expect a Golf-sized crossover inspired by VW’s 2014 T-Roc Concept.

And then there’s the T-Cross, which points towards something smaller still. Heralded by Bischoff as “the new start [of VW],” the Concept is fitted with a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine with 108bhp and a seven-speed DSG. Good for 62mph in a little over 10secs, it’s a bit longer and much wider than an existing Polo, and tips the scales at 1,250kg.

There's a bit of Range Rover Evoque Convertible about the styling (there aren't many ways to style an SUV convertivble), which is awash with concept-y details destined never to see production. It wouldn’t take much to get the exterior ready for series production, but we suspect VW would err on the side of safety and fit actual buttons to the interior. The interface, which VW says is the kind of thing we’ll find in future products, borrows from the Budd-e CES Concept.

What else? The predictive driving profile selector looks quite cool. It uses GPS plus loads of cameras and sensors, tailoring the car to a particular road or environment, and telling you where you can and can’t drive when (or perhaps if) you’re off-road. And the Beats audio system is apparently quite similar to the one you’ll find in the refreshed Up, which is also at Geneva.
