This S-FR video makes us want Toyota's baby sports car even more

But news about its future isn’t positive, says Paul Horrell…

Published: 29 Oct 2015

At the Tokyo show Toyota brought out its cute sports-coupe concept, the S-FR. Now it's released this short-but-sweet video that makes us pine even more for a production version of the dinky sports car.

Sadly Toyota has so little about the S-FR's likely fate, it amounted to an official information vacuum.

Other inside sources have begun to fill the void, and the news isn't positive.

The trouble is, the GT86 isn't selling well anywhere around the world. So why would Toyota go to the trouble and expense of making another rear-drive sports car that undercuts it – but not by much?

Some people have a theory that a lot of fishing rods will catch more than a single rod. And indeed Tetsuya Tada, head of the GT86 project, has said he wants to see another Toyota sports car above the 86, and one below.

But at the moment the argument is going the other way. To whit, “If we have one unprofitable sports car, let's not throw good money after bad by making another”.

Which is a shame, because we need the diddy, rear-drive S-FR. If you’re in any doubt, watch the video above, and then begin campaigning your nearest Toyota dealership.
