It’s the new Land Rover Discovery concept!

Published: 02 Apr 2014

This video is your first look at the new Land Rover Discovery concept, set to be shown at the New York Auto Show in just a couple of weeks.

It isn't, admittedly, much of a look, showing as it does a lot of inky blackness, the hint of some foldy-tilty seats and a knurled knob.

And Land Rover is equally coy with any official information on the Discovery Vision Concept car, simply saying it will showcase the firm's "key principles of emotive design, unrivalled capability and ultimate versatility". Which translates, we think, as: ‘it'll be an SUV'.

But here's the big news on the next Discovery: it won't be just one car but rather a ‘family' of 4x4s to sit between LR's posh Range Rover and muddy Defender brands.

So we'll see the seven-seat successor to the current Disco, but also a replacement for the Freelander, likely spun off the same platform and wearing a Discovery badge: think Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

Land Rover promises the Disco family will also take the brand to ‘new levels' through ‘new customer-focused advanced technologies', which hopefully means a slick new replacement for the Range Rover's not-very-class-leading infotainment system.

"We have created the Vision Concept to share the essence of Land Rover's new age of Discovery and to debut a new, compelling, relevant design direction that connects on an emotional level with customers of today and tomorrow," says Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern.

Which means... actually, we have no idea what that means. But we'll find out in a couple of weeks...
