Classified of the week: a very successful Porsche 911
This 911 Carrera 2.7 RS won many rallies and has its own song. Offers in excess of £1m
Want to spend north of a million quid on a Porsche 911, but want real heritage rather than reimagined style? Step this way.
On the same day Singer shows off two of its latest commissions, another classic 911 is up for sale at H&H Classics for a similarly mysterious (and large) sum of money. It’s a little different to them, though.
This is a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, widely regarded as one of the finest 911s – and, indeed, cars – of all time. It’s a right-hand-drive car, the last imported to the UK, and one of 17 of those which came with the more focused Lightweight specification. That included thinner panels and glass and the ditching of non-essentials like rear seats and a glovebox, all in the name of extra speed.
And with plausible reason: this car has genuine motorsport kudos, having competed in a number of rallies. It placed highly in the RAC Rally in the UK, as well as whipping a load of other RSs into shape on the international rally scene.
This 911 has other obscure claims to fame, too. It was used to help develop an electronic trip meter during the 1978 RAC Rally, and it was the subject of its own pop song in 1974, titled ‘Hey CB’ in reference to its wonderfully named driver, Cathal Brendon Curley. When was the last time you read that kind of claim in a classified ad?
After being exported to South Africa, its racing career continued into the late 1980s, before an accident at the old Kyalami circuit forced it into retirement. It went into storage until 2010, but has been fully restored since emerging from its slumber.
Quite some history, then, and H&H promises a “comprehensive collection of research material and memorabilia” to go with it. We’re only interested if that includes a copy of ‘Hey CB’. For a car up for private sale, inviting offers “well in excess of” £1million, you’ll want the special edition gatefold vinyl…
