Buy these cars at next weekend's Silverstone auction

This is no ordinary Renault 5 Turbo. It’s actually a Turbo 2 Evolution ‘Type 8221’, which means it’s one of 200 built to homologate the Group B Maxi 5 Turbo in the mid-eighties. These cars had aluminium roofs, alloy doors and uprated engines, giving something like 175bhp. This one’s looking a bit tatty, hence its £25,000 - £30,000 estimate, but could be worth as much as £130,000 restored. Showing two owners from new and accompanied by a healthy-looking history file, surely it’s worth lavishing a bit of care and attention on?

Carpet magnate Bruce Aspinall bought this 930 Turbo in 1980. He owned it for three years before deciding its standard bodywork was just too tasteful. Enter Rinspeed, which in 1983 turned Mr. Aspinall’s 930 into what it called an ‘R69’ – a widebody, flat-nose 930 with the headlights and taillights from a Porsche 944 and massive side-strakes. Not to everyone’s tastes, but Mr. Aspinall was so happy with it, he used it right up until his death in 2011. Fair play. It’s expected to fetch between £80,000 and £90,000.

If you’re still smarting Ford didn’t agree to sell you a new GT, we have good news. Even on this side of the Atlantic there are still a few ’05 era GTs floating about, and while prices are rising, they’re still just about attainable. Well, we say ‘attainable’… This GT is one of the 27 official UK cars. It’s only done 5,000 miles, and less than 250 since its last service. Price? Between £270,000 and £310,000.

The Iso Grifo is a special enough thing on its own – but this one has proper provenance. It was bought new by none other than Mike Hailwood, the winner of nine motorcycle World Championships who also won the 1972 Formula 2 Championship, competed in 50 Grands Prix and finished third at Le Mans. This one had a Chevy small-block 327 V8, a four-speed manual and is one of just 26 right-hand drive Series I Grifos built. It’s expected to sell for between £220,000 and £260,000.

If the Carrera RS was the 911 GT3 of the 964 generation, the RS N/GT was the GT3 RS. The former had a stripped-out interior, thinner glass, less sound-deadening and an aluminium bonnet. The latter took things one step further by doing away with all the carpets, adding a full roll-cage and FIA-spec seats. It had a long-range fuel tank, dual internal fire extinguishers and internal dash mounted engine cut-off. Serious business. 290 were made. This one’s gonna go for £165,000 or so.

The Sultan of Brunei is known for having quite…colourful tastes when it comes to cars. Take this very blue Merc SL60 AMG, one of two supplied new to the Sultan in ’93 and one of just 49 built in right-hand drive. These were the days when it was easy to tell what engine your Merc had, because it said it on the boot. SL60 means 6.0-litres, which in the early nineties meant almost 400bhp and 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds. With 54,000 miles on the clock, it’s expected to sell for between £38,000 and £44,000.

We’ve got a bit of a soft spot for these things. Less than 1000 SZs were handbuilt by Zagato, all in LHD and all with the fabulous 3.0-litre Alfa V6, plastic body panels and all. And this is a good one, with just two owners from new – the first in Germany, the second a Brit who imported it in 2000. Stored between 2004 and 2015, its odometer reads 69,025km. At auction it’s expected to make between £45,000 and £52,000.

Exceptionally cool 230SL ‘Pagoda’ is expected to fetch up to £90,000 when it crosses the auction block. It’s not totally original – it was upgraded in the nineties to a 2.5-litre engine and four-speed auto gearbox, but we’re told that’s a common and desirable modification. It’s described as immaculate, having been subject to a £100K plus restoration by a known specialist. How can you put a price on looking this cool?

There are a few Cossies in Silverstone’s auction, but this is the one you want – the very first RS500. Built to homologate the Sierra for Group A racing, the RS500 was a bigger step-up from the normal Sierra Cosworth than you might expect – it had an upgraded engine giving 224bhp, more cooling and more aero. 499 of the 500 were built by Tickford, the other one by Ford. That’s this one. It’s chassis number one, the original development car, and someone is going to pay through the nose for it. Silverstone reckons up to £120,000.

A proper, old-school Lambo. One of very few UK-market SVs, and apparently the only SV ordered with the optional GT rear wing. Can’t be many in dark green either, we’d wager. 5.7-litre N/A V12 and five-speed manual gearbox mean 0-62mpg in 4.5 seconds and 202mph. Expect to pay between £130,000 and £150,000.
