BMW M1 news - M1 or Enzo? - 2008

Published: 21 Oct 2008

It takes quite an eBay listing to tear us away from a famous Ferrari Enzo, but this might just do it.

This is a 1979 BMW M1 in full ProCar trim. We want it. Very much.

Not least because it’s road-legal. Though it looks like a track-only M1, this is in fact one of the 456 road-spec production M1s built by BMW between 1978 and 1981.

It’s been done up to look like one of the M1 ProCars, the one-make championship that ran for just two years in 1979 and 1980 to enable BMW to make enough M1s to enter the old FIA Group 4 classification.

Which means you get an awesome M-division paint job and a set of similarly-coloured seats, smart deep dish wheels and a massive rear wing. And, of course, an ultra-rare mid-engined BMW with a 3.5-litre straight six and a guaranteed spot at the ‘Sub Zero’ end of the Cool Wall.

The only bad news is that it’ll cost you $189,000 – about £95,000. But the way the US economy is going at the moment, surely that’ll be down to about a tenner in a few weeks?
