Here are seven of our favourite Aston Martin concepts

With the covers removed from the AM-RB 001, TG looks back at Aston's best designs

  • By now, you will have seen the new Aston Martin AM-RB 001. And if you haven’t, may we suggest you go and read about it immediately, because it’s quite a thing.

It’s the latest – and maybe best – in a long line of concepts to have worn an Aston badge, and that’s saying something because there’ve been some pretty spectacular ones through the years.

Click through quite possibly the best-looking gallery we’ve ever put together for our favourite seven, and by all means tell us yours in the comments below...

  • Aston Martin CC100

Aston built two of these things to celebrate its centennial. Revealed at the 2013 Nurburgring 24hrs, the look is inspired by the DBR1 that won the Nurburgring 1000km and Le Mans 24hrs in 1959. Power comes from Aston’s familiar V12, via a hydraulically actuated six-speed automated manual gearbox.

  • Aston Martin Bulldog

Project K.901 – or ‘Bulldog’, as it’s better known – was built in 1980 to show off Aston’s then new facility at Newport Pagnell. It was designed by the same bloke who did the DBS and Lagonda, and powered by a 5.3-litre V8 with a pair of Garrett turbochargers. The result? 700bhp and a theoretical 237mph top speed. Never made production, sadly.

  • Aston Martin DB10

Built for Bond, from a V8 Vantage base and styling which looked ahead to the then-unreleased DB11. Read all about it by clicking on these blue words.

  • Bertone Jet 2+2

Ok it isn’t technically a concept, but who cares? There’s only one, so it’s as good as. Basically, it’s a first-gen Rapide estate. Commissioned by a Brit, it was built by Bertone and took just three and a half months to complete. We’ve driven it.

  • Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept

Started out as a concept, then Aston announced it would build 99 at around half a million quid a go. Besides the bespoke carbon body, the Zagato has a unique suspension setup which promises a “more dynamic experience”.

  • Aston Martin DP-100

One of the Vision GT Concepts designed for Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3, with an entirely theoretical 800bhp twin-turbo V12. Aston displayed a full-size model of it at Goodwood a couple of years ago, which is good enough for us.

  • Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Like the Vanquish Zagato, it started off as a concept, but Aston soon decided to build a few, via a couple of motor shows and a run at the Nurburgring 24hrs. 150 of the V12 Vantage-based coupes found homes, with each one taking 2,000 man hours to finish.

  • Honourable mention – Aston Martin One-77

OK so it's not a concept, but with those lean, straked, proportions and typical Aston flair, it certainly looks like one. Socking great V12 underneath, carbon fibre core, aluminium body. Lovely. We've driven it, too.
