Central London is about to get a 20mph speed limit

From Monday, every road in the Congestion Charge Zone will be included

Published: 28 Feb 2020

Transport for London has announced that, as of 00:01 this coming Monday 2 March, every road within the Congestion Charging Zone will feature a 20mph speed limit.

The move is apparently part of TfL’s wider campaign to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from the whole transport network by 2041.

According to TfL, 131 people were killed in speed-related collisions on London's streets between 2016 and 2018, and this new legislation will cover over 5.5 miles of pedestrian-heavy roads in the capital.

It’ll also be supported by the Metropolitan Police’s new ‘speed enforcement team’, as well as a whole host of new signage and road markings. All speed cameras in the area will be recalibrated if they weren’t already on sections of 20mph road.
