Caterham unveil track-only R600

We love Caterhams here at Top Gear. If you need a hobby - and have a selection of hammers - you can build one in your garage. If you want to lap our track quicker than a Bugatti Veyron, you buy an R500. And now, for people mad enough to think that was too slow, GOOD NEWS! there's a new faster one: the 275hp supercharged Superlight R600.

The R600 is said to have all the driving characteristics inherent to all Sevens, but will be faster and more powerful - which surely means even more fun.

Like the rest of the Superlight range, the R600 has a 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine, but this time with a double ton's worth of torque - 13 per cent more than an R500. In fact, the car has a lot in comparison with the Caterham's ultimate track-day toy, SP/300.R  

Like the SP, it's for the track only, has a similar supercharged powertrain and the 275bhp goes to the rear wheels through a six-speed, sequential gearbox. What it doesn't have is the SP's big wings for downforce, which we're predicting could make this little Seven very lively.

The car can be yours for £44,995. But if you already own an R300, you can pay (no price has been decided) to have this supercharged expansion pack added to bring to R600 spec. After that, you can then enter a new flagship Superlight R600 Championship and show your driving God abilities. From there, it's a short step to filling Michael Schumacher's seat. Maybe...
