Caterham sold a record number of cars in 2021

Proof that the world still wants lightweight British sports cars. Hurrah!

Published: 23 Mar 2022

Great news! Caterham has announced that it sold a record number of cars in 2021, with a fairly major 41 per cent increase over pre-pandemic levels.

Okay, we might not be talking Toyota or VW Group numbers here, but to the 670 people that purchased a new Caterham in 2021 – TG salutes you. The lightweight British sports car is here to stay.

Caterham says that the new, even-lighter Seven 170 (pictured) contributed to the record number, but that the Seven 420 was still its best-seller overall, despite it having been available since 2015. For context, Caterham’s previous yearly sales record was 667 cars, while in 2019 (the last year before the unmentionable) it took 442 orders.

For 2021, a new dealer in Portugal meant 22 cars were shifted there, with 27 sold in Italy and 49 set for a life dodging huge pickup trucks and SUVs in the US. As expected, the UK was the largest market, with over a third of Caterhams staying on these shores.
