Michael Dunlop goes second on Isle of Man TT all-time wins list
Northern Irishman surpasses John McGuinness; now only two victories behind uncle Joey Dunlop
Michael Dunlop has grabbed the 24th Isle of Man TT win of his career, with victory in the Supertwin race taking him second on the all-time list just two wins shy of TT legend (and, of course, his own uncle) Joey Dunlop.
The 34-year-old had drawn level with John McGuinness on 23 wins by dominating the six-lap Superbike race at the weekend, during which he set a lap averaging 135.046mph, less than half a mile an hour down on Peter Hickman’s 135.452mph record from 2018.
But he’s pulled away from McGuinness at the first opportunity, finishing the Supertwin race almost half a minute ahead of his closest challenger riding a Patron S1-R.
That makes it three wins from four races at the 2023 TT so far (Dunlop finished second to Hickman in the Superstock race), and the Northern Irishman will have another shot at the top-step in the Supersport race aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 BN6.
Meanwhile, the Isle of Man TT is rarely without tragedy and sadly this year’s event is no different: organisers have announced that Spanish rider Raul Torras Martinez died after an incident during the final lap of the Supertwin race on Tuesday. He was 46.
