Beijing 2012: Eterniti Artemis

Published: 24 Apr 2012

What price, excess? Ladies and gentlemen of the Internet, meet the new Eterniti Artemis. It is a luxury SUV. It is a hot-rod. It is £252,000.

You might remember this car from such hits as the Eterniti Hemera and the Porsche Cayenne; the latter being the car it is based upon, the former its original name.

Unveiled at the Beijing motor show where the Artemis will hope to find many, many new homes, the cars on display are described as running prototypes, and Eterniti proudly trumpets the fact that should it stick to a summer 2012 production schedule, it will beat the luxury SUVs offered by Bentley, Maserati and Lamborghini. Them's fighting words.

As such, the Artemis features some powerful artillery: basically, a tweaked version of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo's 4.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8, set to produce over 600bhp and 553lb ft of torque. Eterniti claims a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of over 180mph, both a little bit quicker than the car it's based on.

Obviously, the Cayenne is no slouch in the corners, but Eterniti has enlisted the help of former F1 driver Johnny Herbert and Jaguar XJ220 designer Alastair Macqueen to hone the performance and handling.

The rear cabin is 100mm longer than the Cayenne's, with twin reclining rear seats, iPad-ready holders and a drinks chiller, giving you some idea of its target clientele. Elsewhere you've got the ‘finest leathers', quilted undercarpets, lambswool rugs, natural woods, some carbon fibre and a high-end audio system.

That custom body is made from carbon composites and hand-built, and the wheels? Goodness, 23in lightweight forged alloys, no less. Could be an idea to exercise caution when approaching kerbs. Or road humps. Or surrounding wildlife.

It's a rebodied and tuned Porsche Cayenne Turbo. For £252,000. Have a look through the pictures. If you had to have a luxury SUV, would it be the Lambo, Bentley EXP 9 F or the Maserati? Or would you rather eat your own hair?
