Video: how to prepare a car for James Bond
A behind-the-scenes look at how Aston Martin prepped ten DB10s for Britain’s best super-spy
Earlier this year, James Bond’s company car policy was due for renewal. Luckily, the folks at Aston Martin set the super-spy up with a new set of wheels: the gorgeous DB10.
And as this new video released today reveals, Aston Martin and the Spectre film crew went to great lengths to prep a car for the world’s best double agent.
You'll know of course, that the DB10 isn't the DB9’s production-bound successor, but an exclusive car built just for Bond and Spectre. Don’t be surprised if you see some of its svelte lines on the new DB11, mind. It sits on a modified V8 Vantage chassis that’s been lengthened and widened to One-77 levels, gets a 4.7-litre V8 and a manly manual gearbox. Flappy paddles simply won't do for 007.
For Spectre, a total of ten DB10s had to be made. Two were set up for high speed drifts and jumps, four were presuamably smashed to smithereens, two gadget-laden variants were set up by Q (exactly what gadgets, we’ll have to wait and see) while two pristine ‘hero’ cars were kept safe for all the pretty shots.
Given the abuse they’re subjected to, all the cars had to go through intensive testing – especially for the ‘speed battle’ scene (as Spectre’s director Sam Mendes puts it) through the streets of Rome.
This is when Bond cinematically slithers around the historic streets of Rome chased by a lurid orange Jaguar C-X75, driven by a very, very large henchman known as Mr Hinx.
Could it immediately nominate itself for best car chase ever? We’ll just have to eagerly await Spectre’s November release to find out.
