Audi RS4 news - End of the line for RS4 - 2007
In a cruel attempt to deny us the fun of what could have been one of the greatest twin-tests in history, Audi is pulling the plug on the RS4 just as the new BMW M3 arrives.
And, even worse, there's no definite word on an RS replacement arriving soon.
Because while Audi has confirmed that the RS4 is ceasing production (and just before the M3 turned up, too), the German firm won't be drawn on when - or even if - the much-rumoured new RS6 will appear.
With the new A4 on the way in 2008, the RS4 is currently being phased out.
"If you go into an Audi dealership today, you won't be able to order an RS4," said an Audi UK spokeswoman. "Yes, there might still be some on the forecourts, but you won't be able to put in an order for a new one."
The RS4 was widely expected to be replaced by a RennSport version of the A6, believed to be pencilled in for a debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. But Audi is keeping firmly schtum.
"There's no confirmation that we're building an RS6 yet," said the spokeswoman. "But since the new A6 has been around for a couple of years now, it's about the right time for an RS version."
That's a good enough hint for us, and with prospective buyers already putting down deposits for the semi-mythical RS6, we're predicting the world won't be without RS for long.
But for now, join us in marking the departure of the RS4. In Avant form and with dog guard fitted, 'twas the finest Labrador-grater that ever did exist. Auf wiedersehen, pet.
