Audi recovers Type D 1939 racer

Audi has managed to get its hands on a very old and much missed part of its racing heritage: the classic Type D racer in the picture above. It was presumed dead, and lost in Soviet Russia following the end of WW2 and the occupation of Audi's former home at Zwickau by the Red Army. 

But by 1970, an American named Paul Karassik - who happened to speak fluent Russian - managed to track down the dismantled remains of the Type D twin supercharger in Russia and the Ukraine - a process that took him over ten years - and commissioned a full rebuild following consultation with Audi itself.

Audi finally purchased this twin supercharged, fully restored Type D racer, meaning it now owns all three Auto Union racing cars recovered from what was formerly the USSR.
