225bhp Renault 4 actually makes Gumball 3000

Published: 27 May 2011

Remember the 225bhp V6-powered Renault 4 being built for the Gumball 3000 road rally? We were rather taken with its gentlemanly old-school pluck among the usual line-up of brash, shouty millionaire’s playthings.

Well, to our surprise French fabricators L'Ecurie got it finished in time for the event, which started on Tuesday in Covent Garden, London.

The 4L3000, which is essentially a Renault 4 body plonked onto a nitrous-injected Clio V6 platform, is currently making its way to Barcelona, Spain, where it’ll stop for the night before powering on to Istanbul. The Gumball route also takes in Monaco, Venice and Belgrade before the finish line in Turkey, 5000kms later.

Whether or not ‘Project Old to New’, which had its last bolts tightened up just 13 days ago, makes it the full length of the trip remains to be seen. But we want it to beat the £1m hypercars and bling-fond celebs quite badly.

Follow its progress here.

Bonne chance, mes braves!
