Ford Mustang Mach-E Extended Range AWD – long-term review

I recently had the chance to take the Editor’s Ford Mustang Mach-E GT away for a week. Not one to be wasteful of an opportunity I did what any sane person would – adjusted the seats, steering wheel and dodgy radio station and drove hundreds of miles around the UK. Starting in London (where finding a parking space close to a lamppost charger was, quite frankly, a mission) then reaching all the way up to Scotland with a few stops between – including a ‘Mustang Day’ meet at Caffeine and Machine.  

Let’s start there, shall we? The gathering of old Mustangs, for a UK event, was seriously impressive, as was hearing their engines… as was the number of Mach-Es in attendance. I was half-expecting the Mustang traditionalists to start kicking off and lobbing rocks at the EVs, but no such drama – it seems any anger from the Mustang name being plastered across an electric family SUV has long since subsided.   

My first impression, when the Mach-E was revealed back in 2019, was 'this is cool, but it’s not a Mustang Mustang'. Since then, my opinion’s evolved. I’m not an SUV or big car fan, but the shape is growing on me… and boy does it have road presence. That aggressive front end meant nobody dared to pull out in front of me. The electric button door handles threw me and my passengers a bit though - very futuristic but what’s wrong with a good old-fashioned handle?

Before setting off, I did my research and split the drive up. I had to stop at Stratford-upon-Avon and Knutsford Services and charged a total of eight times over the week. Most chargers were simple to use and only some made you sign your life away. To mitigate risk I never let it lower than 40 miles of predicted range. In Scotland however, there weren’t as many chargers around. I found one in a services just over the border and witnessed the perfect example of lacklustre infrastructure: two cars darted for the space next to the charger I’d just left and a full fight almost broke out as I drove off. Crazy.

Have to say, I like the interior more than I thought I would. It’s spacious and full of hidden storage (my favourite feature being under the centre console tray which fitted my camera perfectly). Obvious observation incoming… the screen is massive. It takes a while to get used to all the different settings, but I got there, my only disappointment with so much display to play with is that you can’t stream films or TV while you wait to charge. Job for the facelift, Ford.
