Driving

What is it like to drive?

With the emphasis very much on refinement rather than speed and handling neither the base model 365bhp 3.3-litre V6 nor the 420bhp 5.0-litre V8 offer class leading numbers. But what is there – and despite our default desire for V8s, the V6 is almost as swift to 60mph as the bigger-engined car – fits well with the car’s relaxed character.

You can push it outside its comfort zone and the handling becomes imprecise, but rein in the sporting ideas and the G90 settles into a ride that we thought had died out with 70s US luxury cars. Unlike those old cars, it retains a purchase on the road and the steering remains surprisingly communicative. Even if the messages at speed are mostly to encourage you to slow down.

If you want to just sit back and enjoy the ride, the G90 is more than happy to help. Fitted as standard with a package of driver assistance aids, which almost every European competitor would only include at significant extra cost, it will cruise adaptively and brake automatically if you wish.
