Buying
What should I be paying?
Over the odds we suspect. They have been so popular that, at the time of writing in January 2025, they are currently unavailable to order. It’s not just the First Editions with their round headlights that have sold out, but the cheaper square-lamped Invincible models as well. Meanwhile, over on the used market, unscrupulous dealers are selling second-hand cars for five to ten grand over list. Don’t expect that to last.
If you can get hold of one, both trim levels have more gear than you actually need, kitted out with multimedia touchscreen, head-up display, 14-speaker JBL audio, black 20-inch wheels and a sunroof. Hopefully more basic versions will arrive in due course – but while it’s so popular, Toyota has no incentive to bring in lesser versions at reduced prices.
Running costs aren’t going to be cheap. It sits in insurance group 49 – possibly because underwriters are savvier than you think and realise how people are likely to use/abuse their Land Cruiser. And although it’ll be more efficient than an Ineos Grenadier (a diesel one of those averages around 23mpg), and return around 28-30mpg on road (falling to 22-24mpg off-road), you’re not going to be saving that much. Until it comes to servicing. Let’s be honest: it’s a Land Cruiser, maintenance is entirely optional.
Putting that to one side, £74,995 may sound like a steep starting price, but we reckon you can buy one of these with real peace of mind. Its unparalleled reputation means you’re not going to be digging out the warranty handbook, and – looking long term – existing Land Cruiser residual values are good with not even old, high-mileage cars suffering too much.
