Interior

What is it like on the inside?

The Camry’s boot is vast. And deep, because this time the hybrid system’s batteries are under the rear seats instead of the boot floor. And it's so long, that if you want to grab something that has somehow ended up against the back of the rear bench, you have to practically clamber into and crawl to the back of the load-bay to retrieve it. Not elegant.

The front is fine - comfy seats, spacious and relatively airy. We’d like to be able to set the driver’s seat a couple of inches lower, but no big deal, the driving position is still good. Meanwhile in the back there’s decent legroom, but headroom could be better. A 6ft chap won’t bang his head getting in or out, but his 6ft 4in mate might. A couple of USB ports ought to keep your fares quiet.

Leather is standard - something that’ll make the minicabists who buy this thing very happy indeed, even if it doesn’t feel particularly nice to the touch. Purely because it’s wipe-clean. Easy to sluice out the sick after an especially messy Friday night on the town. Elsewhere the materials are a mixed bag - some that you touch frequently feel a bit cheap, while others you’ll never even graze are needlessly soft-touch.

The infotainment is a bit hit and miss, too. The UI is easy enough to figure out, but it’s missing Apple CarPlay (which is pretty fundamental, nowadays) and a bit slow to respond. It’s set in a dash that’s very Toyota - lots of design going on - with some questionable trim that neither looks nor feels nice. Top spec cars get wireless phone charging, with a tray that slides back to reveal a cubby underneath.
