What should I be paying?
Prices start at $40,770 for the rear-drive SR5 and go as high as $66,990 for the range-topping TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims. Each of the nine trims are fairly distinct from one another, from the essentials-only SR5 to the Platinum lux version.
The shopping list starts with the base SR5, followed by the TRD Sport and Sport Premium. These have the standard equipment, with the Sport trims being a bit more street-tuned in terms of suspension, along with some gloss black accents. These three trims just have the non-hybrid four-pot available, and come in either RWD or part-time 4WD.
TRD Off-Road, Off-Road Premium and Limited offer the choice between both powertrains, along with full- or part-time 4WD contingent on selection. These come with more premium features while the off-road trims are equipped for more rugged terrain.
Lastly, there are the three jewels in the 4Runner crown: TRD Pro, TRD Trailhunter and Premium, the latter two being new additions to the 4Runner line-up. TRD Pro has long been the 4Runner’s best foot forward, fully equipped with all the adventurous accoutrements plus a beefier suspension, and the new one is no different.
The new Trailhunter trim is about the same, only with its own uniquely configured suspension while the Platinum is a fully-loaded luxury flagship road-favoring model. This trio is fitted exclusively with the i-Force Max hybrid and full 4WD.
Which one should I pick?
If you’re looking to stretch a dollar, the SR5 is quite capable in its part-time 4WD setup and the standard options realistically tick most boxes on the must-haves checklist. In a way it’s the most charming since it’s the 4Runner in its most raw form, leaving you to focus on off-roading rather than staring at a screen.
We’re tempted by the TRD Pro because we’re always going to want the 4Runner with the most trailblazing capability, but we’re probably going to wait a bit for this new one to prove itself. Split the difference, and the TRD Off-road has the largest spread of options, including powertrains, and it’s mostly ready to hit the dirt. All while in a reasonable price range.
