This is not the Porsche Macan to buy. I know, on paper it looks like the go-to option: only three grand more than the 234bhp base model (which is special order only, telling you all you need to know), the same money as the diesel, but with an extra 85bhp, helping to lop a second off the 0-62mph time. But you buy a petrol because you want it to feel more aggressive and sporting, and the S isn't that car.

The engine is too smooth and characterless, actually needs a bit of work to get going and never seems to hit that hard. That can be explained away by the fact that once you've added a couple of options this supposedly compact SUV weighs 1,900kg. And you'll be doing well to get 25mpg. No wonder Porsche expects the diesel to account for 60 per cent of sales. Yes, the S does drive well, but it's effective rather than enjoyable in corners. All of which means if you want a hardcore Macan, you'll need to cough up £60k for the Turbo. Ouch.
