Mini Hatch (2013-2024) review

At time of writing the One hatchback is currently unavailable, with prices starting from £22,935 for the three-door Cooper. The five-door model is a £660 uplift.

Moving up the range, the Cooper S starts from £26,490 (with the five-door model an extra £700 on top in this instance), while the top-spec John Cooper Works model starts from £32,755.

On lease, you’re looking at somewhere around £300 per month, on a four-year agreement with a £3,000 down payment, through Mini’s own finance scheme.

What are my trim options?

Once you've picked your engine, the most basic trim level is Classic, which still gets LED lights front and rear, the large 8.8-inch infotainment screen and plenty of other bits of kit. Upgrading from there means splitting off to either Sport trim (which is now identical looking to the JCW) or Exclusive (which retains some of the old chrome and fills the cabin with leather).

Even if you go for a higher trim level you’ll still be browsing the options list though. There are endless exterior colour combinations (for a price) and many different interior upholsteries. Particularly pleasing is the light chequered cloth option on Classic models. There are a terrifying amount of alloy wheel options too, with sizes ranging from 15- to 18-inches.

Unsurprisingly, the three-door Cooper is the most efficient one you can buy right now, with a claimed 47.9mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 134g/km if you spec the auto gearbox. The JCW with a proper manual meanwhile claims 39.8mpg and 161g/km of CO2.

What's the best spec?

We’d be tempted to go for the slightly more powerful Cooper S, which adds a warm hot hatch feel without going too overboard.

Base-spec Classic trim probably has enough features as standard, though if your budget can stretch that far we’d suggest ticking the £2,350 Premium Plus Package box, which adds several creature comforts.

In that spec you’re looking at just under £30,000 with metallic paint and a decent set of wheels.
