Buying
What should I be paying?
Let’s assume you’ve decided to ignore the countless other, better-resolved e-SUVs on sale and you’ve settled on the IM6 as your weapon of choice. The entry point is the RWD Long Range and it will cost you £47,995. On paper it’s the one to have because it’s the rangiest, and at 5.4s over 0-62mph it’s more than quick enough.
It’s also dripping with kit. All the driver assistance systems, parking gadgets and crab mode, plus the rear-wheel steering. You get LED headlights front and rear, parking sensors and a 360-degree camera, 20in aero alloys, massage driver’s seat (both front seats are heated and ventilated), heated rears, ambient lighting, the driving modes and regen, the massive screenage with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 50W wireless charging pad, a USB-C socket apiece in the front and back, and a 20-speaker audio system. Phew. Oh, and a heat pump to boost efficiency in winter.
Stepping up to the Performance costs £50,995, and it adds the Millennium Falcon-bothering extra motor and 21s. Not to mention a snow mode.
The Launch Edition is £52,995, and this is where you’ll find the better-riding air suspension and active dampers.
Is that the one to have?
If you value your sanity, 100 per cent. And even then you might not be fully satisfied with the ride, so a decent test drive is an absolute must before you sign on the dotted line. Normally we’d plump for the cheapest, rangiest one – this requires an exception.
Options? Er, you can choose from a grey or white interior, and paint colours include white (free), blue, grey and black (all £545). The IM6 is backed by a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty – no doubt that’ll sway some fence-sitters.
The IM6 certainly holds its own on the kit front – that’s all some people look for, though we’d strongly argue that stuff like the Kia EV6, Skoda Enyaq and Ford Mustang Mach-E represent better value for money despite being that bit smaller. Nor is the IM6 a match for the comfort or road manners of the pricier BMW iX or Hyundai Ioniq 9. It’s trapped in a crevasse between those two extremes.
