Does the AMG GT qualify as a supercar? Maybe not, but the ownership experience would surely be every bit as romantic and evocative. The running costs will also be comparable, though. The base model emits 216g/km of CO2 and records 30.4mpg, but you’ll need the patience, not to mention the driving style, of a saint to match those figures. Drive any GT as it was built to be driven and you’ll see an mpg figure in the high-teens.

The shortage of boot space could well prove to be a hindrance on longer trips and driving holidays, although there is space for a couple of smaller bags immediately behind the headrests. Being so wide and low the GT isn’t the best car in which to tackle busy urban traffic; driving through central London in a GT feels like crawling on your hands and knees through the Battle of Waterloo.
