McLaren 620R review
Buying
What should I be paying?
Its £250,000 entry ticket – sans roof scoop and slicks – seems chunky. Especially when a 600LT is £185,000. But the 620R will be rarer, with just 225 being made, and it offers so much more. If you’re buying your hardcore supercar as a genuine track toy rather than a road plaything, at least.
You’ve a choice of three colours as standard – McLaren Orange, Silica White and Onyx Black – each with the GT4 race livery you see here. But we found it all rather attention-grabbing on road, and it might potentially write cheques your driving talent won’t cash on a senior-level trackday. Over to McLaren’s MSO bespoke division, then, where you can create any exterior look you wish. A nice de-liveried grey or silver, please.
Oh, and on top of its 2.9secs to 62mph and 200mph top speed, McLaren still quotes sensible numbers too. Namely 23.2mpg combined and 278g/km of CO2. The seven-speed paddleshift auto of regular Sports Series cars remains (albeit with elongated paddles), and it’ll still shuffle straight up to seventh with remarkable fervour if you’ve not toggled the powertrain into Track mode. Storage space remains under the front bonnet, too. It's big enough for two helmets, at the very least.
