Buying

What should I be paying?

The i30’s easygoing nature should continue here. The big draw for many will be its five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. Only Kia offers a better aftersales setup. The engines all emit fairly low CO2 numbers – just the manual 108bhp diesel drops below 100g/km, but the latest tax rules mean that’s not a big issue.

Prices start at around £17,000 for a base-spec 1-litre petrol, which proves just how far Hyundai’s come in the last 15 years. This is no longer a budget option, though it’s still a couple of grand cheaper than an equivalent VW Golf.

The sweetest engine/spec setup is probably the SE Nav 1.4 T-GDi, which costs £21,055, is in VED band G and has a 24 per cent BIK rate.
