Buying
What should I be paying?
Given the amount of choice in the Transit range, it's probably not worth us listing every single possible price here, but we’ll whittle through the base prices in size order: the Transit Courier starts at £16,200, the Transit Connect £23,500, the Transit Custom £32,350, and the full size Transit £40,375. All without VAT.
Good luck speccing yours; the configurator swallowed us whole for an afternoon, and we still hadn’t found the Transit to suit our hypothetical ‘real job’ (one involving physical labour, rather than tapping at a keyboard while clutching a Café au Lait). Mind you, having an actual job does probably help narrow down your options and decide for certain whether you want to add refrigeration or not. We’re still undecided…
As for fuel economy, this will depend on a) which size of Transit you’ve bought, and b) quite how much of a hurry you’re in between jobs. But we were comfortably getting mid 30s mpg out of a fully loaded big Transit. And we were being certifiable idiots (hence that flagrant 488 Pista reference earlier). It wouldn’t be the best-selling van by a mile if it was also the most cost-inefficient to run.
We also managed to get over 30mpg out of a loaded-up Transit Courier diesel with a manual gearbox, and nearer 40mpg from an unloaded Transit Custom with the 2.0-litre diesel engine. All in the same ballpark, then.
For even cheaper running costs you’ll be wanting one of the myriad of hybrid (the Connect and Courier both get PHEV powertrain options) or electric (all but the Connect) options. Look, here’s TG’s E-Transit review on a plate for you.
