What is it like on the inside?

The AX’s dashboard is not a classic. It’s like sitting in a game of Tetris being played on a black’n’white television. Ask your parents, kids. At least the seats have some shapeliness to them, and some red highlights to lift the ambience. 

The driving position is poor – you either sit absolutely bolt upright or recline like you’re on a sun-lounger. The first option is uncomfortable, but the second option leaves you unable to turn the steering wheel, so on balance, straighten up and drive right.

Earlier cars have a one-spoke steering wheel. Only later models have three-spokers to anchor your fatigued thumbs. And other than that… there’s not much to say. The paper thin doors need an ultra-slam to close. There’s quite a lot of storage space dotted around, but the back seats are for children only. We’d prefer to leave that space as a bit of extra crumple zone…
