Buying

What should I be paying?

Look away now, people who think the R8 is boring because it shares bits with other Audis. You won’t like this at all. Good, now they’re gone, we can share the good news for running an Audi R8 – it’s not scary at all. Because – guess what – the bits it shares with other Audis are pretty bulletproof.

The gearboxes look after their clutches, four-wheel drive systems don’t need attention and the engines are strong. If you’re in the market, you might be put off that R8s have fairly high mileages, but don’t be – this was, after all, designed to be a super sports car that owners use every day, and plenty of owners have done just that. It’s no crime to use these things. Just be wise to ones that have been tastelessly wrapped or lowered. Just as though you were buying an L-plated supermini, modified stuff should ring the alarm bells, especially when the factory set-up was so sweet. And check the wing pops up and down. It doesn’t? Great! Now there’ll be no speeding tell-tale and no chance of needlessly extending it at town speed to pose.
