There's a Q50 in the TopGear Garage. The hybrid version. It's all-wheel drive, powerful and quick. But we've never really fallen in love with it - it seems curiously soulless. And the story is much the same with this new 208bhp, 258lb ft 2.0-litre turbocharged rear-drive version.

Yes, it's comfortable. Yes, its interior is nicely trimmed. And, yes, it's well equipped. But it's not engaging to drive, the steering has little feedback or feel and its 1,703kg kerbweight makes itself known in fast cornering. But anyone who's seen previous Q50 reviews will not be surprised to read this.

However, the big news here is the shiny new engine, which despite having a hefty wodge to propel around, manages to acquit itself admirably. Its power delivery is strong and linear, getting on song at around 2,000rpm and topping out at a 6,500rpm red line. Unsurprisingly though, we can't bring ourselves to recommend the Infiniti over its German rivals. Both BMW and Mercedes have more dynamic, lighter, more luxurious offerings.

But the big differentiator remains that lack of soul, that lack of feel. TopGear loves driving and this car just doesn't feel as though it shares that all-important emotion.
