This new 2.0-litre turbo petrol - the shiniest highlight of the Q5's mid-life refresh, which also incorporates a gentle facelift and retrimmed cabin - is a very fine engine. It's a cracker, fizzy yet smooth and with a proper kick of pace when you wind it out. Mated to the Q5's weightier steering (another post-facelift benefit) and massive grip, this is one of the very best SUVs to wring down that empty, sinuous mountain road on your morning commute.
But you'd be insane to choose it. Why? Because it's a petrol, and this is a big bluff SUV, and you don't own Kuwait. Sure, it's brilliant to wring down that empty, sinuous mountain road, but how often do you get to do that? Five, six times a day, tops. In between, no matter how carefully you drive it, you'll be lucky to top 30mpg and you'll have to sell one of your organs to pay for fuel.
Stick instead to one of Audi's slick diesels: even the basest 2.0 TDI offers the same torque as this petrol, with nigh-on double the real-world economy. And don't even get us started on the lovely, updated 3.0-litre V6 diesel. OK, it costs a few grand more than this petrol version, but you'll recoup that at the pumps in approximately, ooh, fifteen minutes...
