Welcome to our new commenting system!

Good news, gathered TopGear.commers! We’ve been wielding some virtual hammers under the bonnet of the website in the past few weeks, and, as of today, we’ve updated the way you can comment on articles on TopGear.com.  
 
Millions of you visit our corner of the internet every month, and each one of you is the fuel that drives us on every day (well, almost all of you. Spambots excepted). So we wanted to make it easier for everyone to talk both to us, and each other…  
 
From today, on all news, photo galleries and car reviews you’ll be able to use our new Disqus comments system. You can sign in using your Facebook or Twitter accounts, or create a specific account just for TopGear.com (which will also work on other sites that use Disqus).

Whether you have strong feelings about “Multi 21”, the automatic gearbox on the new RS Clio or one of May’s new shirts, you will be able to reply to specific commenters and start a (polite) conversation among yourselves. You can vote on comments, share posts on your social media accounts, save starred discussions to read later, follow your favourite commenters and all sorts of other innovations that you may recognize from many other places on the internet. 

The TopGear.com team of editors and contributors will also be logging into the comments to share wisdom and answer questions. You’ll know us by our shiny new badges. 

We also have a new virtual bouncer that will stop all the irritating spam that has been plaguing TopGear.com in the last few weeks. Apologies if you’re a massive fan of cheap trainers or jobs that pay $72.39 an hour, but you won’t be seeing any of that rubbish any more. We haven’t yet banned the words “first post” (which should please “Gavron”), but we might still do that in the future...  

Unfortunately, what this does mean is that all existing comments on news stories and photo galleries are no longer visible, and your old log-in won’t work in those sections. If you want to comment on any of those areas of the site, you’ll now have to either use your Facebook/Twitter accounts or create a new Disqus log-in. 

The old commenting system does remain on a few areas of the site: the presenters’ columns, the video section, and the show guide. All being well, these sections will move over to the new system in a few weeks. 

Our blogs on the TV show and motorsport are built on something called Wordpress, so they will remain on the existing Wordpress system for now, and this will also change in the coming weeks.

(Yes, it’s all a bit complicated right now under the bonnet, but remember, this is a site built by Top Gear… A few more virtual hammers and we’ll have it all fixed. How hard can it be?)
