Video: Watch ten of the best motoring world records

This week a Subaru BRZ did the tightest 360 ever. Here are some more record breakers

  • Tightest reverse parallel park

    Stunt driver Alastair Moffatt added another world record to his name this week by performing the snuggest ever 360 degree turn in a Subaru BRZ, pivoting the car inside a gap just 2.25m wider than the length of the vehicle itself.

    Moffatt also caused a stir last year when he set records for the tightest parallel park and the tightest parallel park in reverse in a Fiat 500 and a classic Mini respectively.

    Relive the latter of those achievements in the video above...

  • Largest caravan made of Lego

    {"fid":"437916","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Largest LEGO® Caravan - Guinness World Records","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    It’s safe to say Top Gear hasn’t had the most harmonious relationship with caravans over the years, although this one in particular is hard to ignore.

    Last year, a team of twelve professional Lego builders broke the record for the largest caravan made entirely of interlocking plastic bricks, constructing a 2.2m tall carriage out of 215,158 individual pieces.

    Better still the construction included several amenities such as running water and lights. This might be the first caravan we haven’t immediately wanted to destroy. Maybe.

  • Biggest loop-the-loop

    {"fid":"437921","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Largest loop the loop in a car - Guinness World Records","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Terry Grant has laid claim to several world records over the years, although few of them have required quite as much construction work as his loop-the-loop attempt in 2015.

    Standing at 19.08m tall, Grant completed the 102-tonne loop in a Jaguar F-Pace with an entry speed of 51.5mph. Oh, and a broken hand following an accident in a barrel-roll stunt that went awry. No biggie.

    Read all about Grant’s attempt here.

  • Fastest wheel change

    {"fid":"359321","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Fastest Wheel Change (car) - Guinness World Records","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Without electrical tools, that is.

    Equipped only with wheel wrenches, car jacks and bare hands, a team of four mechanics took just 59.62 seconds to change all four tyres on a Ford Focus last June, shaving 24.23 seconds off the previous benchmark.

    Formula One in contrast frequently sees pit-stops completed in under three seconds, with Ferrari’s 1.85s service of Kimi Raikkonen’s car at Suzuka last year reported to be the quickest of all time.

  • Most consecutive spins while standing on top of a car

    {"fid":"438266","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Most consecutive spins while standing on the roof of a car- Classics","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Another of Terry Grant’s finest moments, stood on top of a spinning 1937 Ford Sedan at Santa Pod Raceway in 2007. He successfully completed 10 consecutive spins before clambering back behind the wheel.

    His tally stood unmatched for five years before Alberto Aires Wierzbicki went and bettered it with an impressive 52 in Brazil in 2012. A truly dizzying feat.

  • Most vehicles crossing in mid-air

    {"fid":"438271","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Four vehicles cross in mid-air! - Classics","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Ken Block, eat your heart out.

    In 2010, a quartet of members from the Chery QQ Car Stunts Performance Team soared into the Guinness Book of World Records by launching two bikes and two cars into the same path at different heights.

    Without so much as a flinch all four performers got airborne at exactly the same time whilst somehow avoiding serious injury. And a serious insurance claim.

  • Longest UTV wheelie

    {"fid":"438276","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Longest UTV Wheelie - Guinness World Records","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Roger Le Blanc set the record for the longest wheelie in a UTV in August 2014, piloting a Honda 700 Pioneer along Moncton International Airport in Canada with Jeff Gallant, Gilles Duipuis, Paul Arsenault and Martin Phinney clinging on for dear life behind him.

    From a standing start, the quintet travelled a distance of 1140.3m on two wheels with barely a wobble along the way.

    Now let’s see them try in something with front-wheel drive...

  • Land speed record

    {"fid":"438281","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Fastest Land Speed - Andy Green OBE & Richard Noble OBE - Guinness World Records 60th Anniversary","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    We couldn’t put together a list of world bests without mentioning the land speed record, currently held by Andy Green following his 1997 attempt in the Thrust SSC.

    Green peaked with a mind-bending speed of 763.035mph, breaking the sound barrier in the process.

    And owing to his experience, Green will get the chance to beat his own record in the 135,000bhp Bloodhound SSC later in 2016 following years of development. The target is 1000mph. Yikes.

  • Longest car jump in reverse

    {"fid":"438286","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Rob Dyrdek's Farthest Car Jump...BACKWARDS","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Top Gear set a similar record in an Austin Allegro in 2008 when TGTV’s stuntman attempted to jump over the largest number of vehicles ever in reverse. He managed it, but only because no one had bothered to try it before.

    Six years later, former professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek delivered a much smoother and altogether more impressive performance by driving a Chevrolet Sonic 27.21m backwards over a ramp.

    Lining up the run at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Dyrdek had to land the car on the ramp and drive away from the stunt in order to qualify for the record. He made it look easy.

  • Heaviest car balanced on head

    {"fid":"438291","view_mode":"wysiwyg","fields":{"format":"wysiwyg","field_media_video_duration[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"alt":"Heaviest car balanced on the head - Guinness World Records Classics","height":428,"width":760,"class":"media-element file-wysiwyg"}}

    Britain’s John Evans balanced an entire Mini on his head for a period of 33 seconds in 1999 and Guinness World Records have since ‘rested’ the category, presumably due to the rather obvious concerns of dropping vehicles on top of people.

    It goes without saying that the Mini that Evans used was a stripped out version, weighing in at 159.6kg. Ultra-light for a car, but try saying that when it’s pivoting on top of your cranium.

    Top Gear advises that you don’t try any of these stunts at home. Especially the land speed record.
