Video: sidecarcross is a thing and it is amazing

Watch lunatics drag their mates in sidecars over massive motocross jumps in this mesmerising motorsport

Published: 24 Jul 2015

Motorbike sidecars are strange, confused things. They’re one wheel away from being a proper grown-up car, equally as impeded as a Robin Reliant but still one wheel better than a motorbike.

But as the video above proves, there are a couple of ingredients that you can throw in the mix to turn a sidecar from a Silly Thing into a Good Thing.

In no particular order, these are: mud, big jumps, competitive spirit, and lots and lots of other sidecars doing the same thing.

Ladies and gents, let us introduce you to the mad world of sidecarcross.

Sidecarcross is essentially motocross, but with a metal trailer grafted onto the side of your scrambler bike. Said trailer holds your daft mate – colloquially known as 'the monkey', we believe – as they do their best to assist with the steering the dynamically flawed machine.

See, a sidebar effectively acts as a massive stabiliser, preventing the bike from leaning in the traditional manner. To counter this, the driver sits on the bike with the throttle wedged open, while the passenger shuffles around like he’s got fire ants in his pants, clambering over the bike and out of his trailer in order to shift the weight and get the thing turned.

But this being motocross, there are lots of muddy jumps. Big muddy jumps.

We’re not sure what the technique is for sidecarcross flight – close your eyes and hold on really tight? – but it looks like brilliant, massively dangerous fun. Have a watch of the video and tell us: greatest motorsport ever?
