This classic Porsche 911 has been covered in coral for art

You’ve heard of the barn find, but now it’s time for the ‘bottom of the deep blue sea find’. Well, not exactly. Apparently lots of confused onlookers at the Gdynia Design Days annual art festival earlier this year thought that this particular 1973 Porsche 911T had been plucked straight from the bottom of the ocean as it was suspended overhead at the dockside and covered in coral.

In reality it was an art installation created by Polish artists Ada Zielinska and Rafal Dominik, playing with the 2022 festival’s themes of the ocean and climate change.

Oh, and the lovely air-cooled 911 was sourced from an owner who was just about to send their car in for a full restoration. Plus the whole coral setup was created using 3D printing and crushed seashells, and the coating was completely reversible.

“It was hard to find someone who would allow us to do this to their car,” said Sworowski.

“We narrowed the search down to contacts we had whose cars were just about to go in for restoration work, and when we found a 1973 911T it seemed like the perfect choice. Whatever it was covered in, everyone would recognise that traditional 911 shape.”

“Rafal and I wanted to do something that connected Porsche to the sea and took some inspiration from Damien Hurst’s exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2017, which displayed ancient artefacts apparently taken from the ocean that were covered in coral,” added Zielinska.

“People are creating reefs with old cars and sunken ships today and we thought it would be interesting to use a classic 911 in a similar way, and to display it right by the sea itself.”
