Volkswagen Scirocco news - 'Roc out - 2008
The two-decade wait for a new Scirocco is nearly over. VW has confirmed that the Golf-derived coupe will go on sale in the UK this November, and has even announced prices and specifications and useful things like that.
The most important of which, unquestionably, is that you'll be able to order your Scirocco in 'Viper Green', the lurid shade that graced the Iroc concept back in Paris in 2006. What more do you need to know?
Prices? OK then. The Scirocco will start at £20,500 for the 120bhp 1.4-litre TSI version with the six-speed manual 'box. The other engine available at launch will be the two-litre, 197bhp turbo petrol engine from the Golf GTI, with a 138bhp turbodiesel and 120bhp TSI arriving shortly after.
Fuel economy will range from a healthy 37mpg for the most powerful petrol engine to 53mpg for the smallest diesel. With the exception of the base-spec petrol and diesel units, all the engines will be available with VW's ubiquitous six-speed DSG gearbox - though the 158bhp petrol engine will be the first to get the seven-speed DSG.
Any other exciting details? The Scirocco will get adaptive chassis control with three driver-controllable modes - normal, comfort and sport - but will also adapt suspension and damper settings automatically and on the fly. Standard kit includes 17-inch alloys and bit o' leather, but if you want the big panoramic sunroof you'll have to pay a bit more.
We're getting our hands on the Scirocco very soon, and we'll let you know what we think as soon as we do.
