Volkswagen Golf estate news - Golf goes estate - 2009

As inevitably as spring turning to summer, or a fresh-faced Hollywood starlet turning to hard drugs and nudey photoshoots, Volkswagen has turned the MkVI Golf into an estate.

It gets, er, a bigger boot than the hatchback Golf. Which is good if you need to transport large objects. Like armchairs. Or publicans.

The big news - apart from the big boot - is a new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, which develops 101bhp but puts out just 119g/km of CO2. Which means £35-a-year road tax.

Visually, the Golf estate gets the same front-end treatment as the Golf hatch, Scirocco and new Polo, along with new tail lights and, excitingly, body-coloured bumpers. The interior's been nabbed straight out the new Golf hatch, with a three-spoke steering wheels as seen in the Passat CC.

Don't get too excited: we're unlikely to see the Golf estate in the UK until early next year. Expect prices to start at around £15,000.
