Watch: tracked Jeeps have fun in the snow

Capable as they are, big SUVs aren’t always the ‘go-anywhere’ vehicles their makers would have you believe. Twiddling a set of dials for a bit more ride height and a different throttle/engine map can only get you so far. That’s where these things come in.

They’re essentially tracks built into aluminium housings that you drive a compatible SUV up and into (not like Nissan's Juke RSnow - which we drove on a Swedish ice lake). The wheels lock in place, and drive the tracks when you step on the gas. Makers of the Track-N-Go system promise installation is a one-man, 15-minute job, and that compatible SUVs require no modifications.

The whole setup weighs a fairly substantial 680kg (each unit is around 170kg), but you get an extra 20cm of ground clearance and what looks like limitless grip in snowy conditions. You can use them on-road too, but only up to 40mph. Boo.

Seen here attached to a couple of Jeeps, a list on the company’s website lists the Land Rover Defender and Range Rover among compatible vehicles – which is mega. No word on price, but we suspect it might be quite hefty. Deeply cool, though.
