Video: Mad Mike drifts up a South African mountain pass
New Zealand drift-king slithers up a nine-mile pass in his 800bhp RX-8
When ‘Mad Mike' Whiddett comes to Britain, he mostly drifts around clusters of mini-roundabouts in Swindon. South Africa doesn’t have many mini-roundabouts, hence Whiddett’s latest video, which features much drifting and precisely zero mini-roundabouts.
It’s called ‘Conquer the Cape’, and it’s set on South Africa’s Franschhoek Pass – a nine-and-a-bit mile mountain pass that ascends 468 metres and normally has a speed limit of between 25 and 60mph. Whiddett hit 154mph in his quite ridiculous-sounding 800-odd bhp Mazda RX-8 quad-rotor drift car, often coming perilously close to a sheer drop into the valley below.
See the results of Whiddett’s smokey labours above, and whatever you do, do not try this at home.
