Video: Dougie Lampkin just wheelied around the whole TT course

37 miles and 95 minutes on just one wheel, as Lampkin puts on a show on the Isle of Man

Published: 26 Sep 2016

What did you do at the weekend? We’re going to wager it wasn’t completing a one hour, 35 minute wheelie around the world’s most famous bike course.

If it was, hello Dougie. And well done. Dougie Lampkin – the enduro rider and all-round motorcycling scamp – has just completed the first officially recognised lap of the Isle of Man TT course on only one wheel.

We imagine he can’t feel his legs today. While the stunt itself looked eerily calm, the mental and physical effort of maintaining the bike’s position for such a long period of time – nearly six times longer than the record lap of the TT course – must have been huge.

There was the average speed of 24mph with half the bike’s wheel-count for starters, not to mention some troublesome weather, which saw Dougie blasted with 40mph gusts of wind.

“Up to ten times I came close to dropping and I thought I’d lost it twice,” said Dougie. “I feel absolute massive relief.

“The build up to it, seven months of planning, everything that's gone on like the nightmare with the weather yesterday and still strong winds today on top of the mountain, I was just hanging on really. It wasn't over until a couple of metres from the end but that last couple of metres was just amazing.”

Just don’t try it at home, kids. Only Dougie – who does live on the Isle of Man and gets sufficently escorted round – is allowed to do that…
