Video: BJ Baldwin’s new toy is a Fifties tank
Forget the trophy truck, what you need to conquer off-road is this
BJ Baldwin is the off-road community’s Ken Block. You may remember him from such films as Recoil, Recoil 2 and, er, Recoil 3 where he jumps, skids and lollops over pretty much whatever terrain you put in front of him.
His weapon of choice is normally a 800bhp, 690lb ft trophy truck with 26 inches of independent travel at the front and 34inches at the rear via a three-link solid axle. But for his latest video, he’s gone a bit left-field. Well, battlefield, to be more precise.
It’s a six-wheeled 1959 Ferret Scout. An actual tank that was made here in the UK between 1952-1971. Initially, it was powered by Rolls-Royce's short-stroke inline-six cylinder, but not BJs.
Instead, the car was overhauled with an LS V8 and given two extra wheels for good measure. They can be engaged via hydraulic motors, while King provided slinky-style suspension with loads of travel and the central turret was turned into an Action Man-style grappling hook launcher that’s attached to a winch. Y’know, just in case power alone isn’t enough to get you out of a hole if you’re stuck.
