Listen to the new Mercedes-AMG GT

Published: 21 Jul 2014

Anything that rolls out of AMG's Affalterbach facility must meet two criteria. One, an incredible ability to turn tyres into a combination of dust and acrid smoke at the first sight of a corner. And two, a guttural soundtrack loud enough to wake up any village in a five-mile radius.

This autumn we'll see AMG's latest offering, the two-seat, F-Type-rivalling GT. We recently spent a day with a prototype version and can confirm it can do skids very well. What we couldn't bring you then was the sound of its 510bhp, 479lb ft engine. But now we can. And the sound is good.

Unlike our favourite normally aspirated AMG V8 soundtracks of the past, the GT's V8 is a 4.0-litre bi-turbo. Yes, turbo. The sound killer. But don't fear, because clever people in Germany have been working their socks off to make the GT sound like a proper sports car. And, if you click play on the video above, you'll hear they've done a pretty tidy job.

Let us know what you think of the noise below. And if you want to read more about AMG's new baby, pick up the latest issue of Top Gear Magazine that's on sale now.
