Here are some interesting classic cars for under £5,000 we found this week

We’d guess that a few of these might even go up in value in the coming years. Maybe

Toyota MR-2
  • Toyota MR2 Mk2

    Toyota MR2 Mk2

A T-bar roof, pop-up headlights and *all* the retro character of the ‘90s. You’d need to have a heart of stone to not want this second-generation MR2 on charm alone. But when you factor in the amount of joy you can coax from its 2.0-litre four-pot on the right road, this becomes nothing short of a bargain.

  • Vauxhall Calibra

    Vauxhall Calibra

If the TG car park were a tiny bit bigger, we would absolutely take this 1995 16-valve Vauxhall Calibra into our loving arms. The sharp rectangular headlights and the five-spoke alloys sit nicely with the pearly purple look. Sure, it's based on an old Cavalier and the interior might be a tad dull, but will you care when the exterior is anything but?

  • Nissan Pulsar GTI-R

    Nissan Pulsar GTI-R

Nissan Pulsar GTI-Rs are properly busy little hot hatches, but what happens when you strip out the luxury fittings and go back to basics in approach? This project car has got a healthy spate of modifications, including a new straight-piped exhaust, induction kit and coilovers. What a thing.

  • Peugeot 406

    Peugeot 406

Quite possibly the best-looking Peugeot of all time. The 406 Coupe merged Pininfarina (yes, that one) styling with a meaty 3.0-litre six-cylinder, which peaked at just over 200bhp. It serves as a reminder of what Peugeot could do when it wasn't busy developing atrocities like the 307.

  • Rover Mini Sprite

    Rover Mini Sprite

Who could’ve possibly predicted the little Mini’s social status would grow to the point where sightings are often met with gasps of excitement? The feel-good factor is still very much there with the original cars, and that’s before we consider that they might be the ideal methods of transport in the cramped metropolitan cities of today.

  • Volvo 480

    Volvo 480

Yes, we’re aware that we continue to have an obsession with pop-up headlights. No, we will not apologise, particularly when they’ve been bolted onto a silhouette which is as neat and true as the Volvo 480. This one is up now for exactly four grand and has the sort of switchgear selection that we really miss in many modern cars.

  • Honda Prelude

    Honda Prelude

If you can haggle the price of this 1993 Honda Prelude down a notch, it would be a seriously impressive investment for this week’s budget. We’d even wager that this may be one of the most well-kept examples in the country, such is the immaculacy of everything from the wheel nuts to the window switches.
