Volkswagen will no longer sell the Golf in America

Big news from America! No, not that. Volkswagen has announced that the standard Golf will no longer be sold in the US, with production at its plant in Puebla, Mexico ending last week.

VW reckons there’s enough stock for it to shift the last of its Mk7.5 Golfs throughout the 2021 model year, but after that it really will be the end. Well, almost, because although the standard Golf is dying, the Mk8 will still travel in GTI and R forms. Hurrah for hot hatches!

Americans – it is now your duty to buy them.

The standard Golf was introduced to the US towards the end of 1974, and VW has sold nearly 2.5 million of the things since. The Mk7, which was technically still in production until last week, was also named North American Car of the Year when it first arrived in 2015.
