Toyota has unveiled a joyfully zingy GR86 special edition inspired by the Scion FR-S
The Japanese carmaker channels its inner Bumblebee for this exceedingly bright Yuzu Edition
‘Yuzu’? It's a type of citrus fruit with a distinct flavour, and is often used in Japanese cuisine, which goes some way to explaining why Toyota USA has created a new range-topping trim for the GR86 called the Yuzu Edition. Zingy.
The bright yellow sports car adopts the vibrant hue in homage to the Scion FR-S, according to Toyota. To embolden the already-very-bold, it's paired with 18in matte black rims and exterior black accents. Frankly, it looks great.
The Yuzu Edition sports the same nat-asp 2.4-litre four-pot boxer engine as the standard GR86, producing 224bhp and 184lb ft of torque. It'll be available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearbox too. You know you want the former.
As with other 86 special editions, the Yuzu gets the Performance Pack as standard. That means it gets Brembo brakes and nitrogen-filled Sachs dampers, and the optional extras of a GR-embossed cat-back exhaust and body kit remain.
Elsewhere, the cabin is equally striking. Fake black suede sports seats have been embellished with contrasting yellow stitching and yellow perforations - but the appearance is subtle, not garish.
There's an 8.0in touchscreen display and eight-speaker sound system as standard on the Yuzu trim, on top of a suite of tech kit and driver assist features also found on the Premium grade.
As is typical, there’ll only be 860 of them made for North America - and nowhere else (blub).
No pricing yet, but keep your eyes peeled between now and Autumn.
