Shelby Daytona news - Cobra Coupe: not worth £10m - 2009
Need car auction advice? Don't come to Top Gear.
Not only did we manage to put a hot tip on completely the wrong Ferrari at last weekend's Leggenda e Passione auction - plumping for the 330 P4 that failed to meet its reserve instead of the 250 Testarossa that sold for a world record £8m - well, remember the lovely Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe we confidently predicted would sell for £10m?
Failed to meet its reserve. Yes, at last weekend's Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis, bidding on the 1965 FIA GTIII-winning Cobra fizzled out at a pitiful $6.8m (£4.4m), below its reserve.
Maybe it was a mistake scheduling the Cobra's sale on the same weekend as the big Maranello event. There's only so much capital an evil megalomaniac can raise by flogging plutonium to shady underground networks in a single week, isn't there?
Since we're on a roll, here's our top tip for the racing today: stick a tenner on Limpy Old Nag in the 14.15 at Towcester. Can't lose...
