The new Shelby Super Snake-R is a widebody 850bhp Mustang Dark Horse

Shelby takes Ford’s top Mustang and turns the volume up to 11

Reckon your Ford Mustang Dark Horse is too slow, too quiet and too, erm, narrow? Well, Shelby now has your answer. This is the new Super Snake-R, which Shelby says is “designed for serious performance enthusiasts”. Sign us up.

To create this thing, Shelby takes a standard Mustang Dark Horse and straps a 3.0-litre Whipple supercharger to its 5.0-litre V8 – the result being over 850bhp that you can send to the rear wheels via a six-speed Tremec manual or a 10-speed auto gearbox. Wow.

To put that power down there are 13in-wide rear tyres that are wrapped around forged 20in magnesium wheels and covered by widened rear arches. There are carbon fibre arch extensions up front too, plus carbon bonnet vents, a carbon splitter, carbon side skirts, a carbon rear diffuser and not one but two carbon rear wings for good measure. Yep, one’s a little ducktail and the other is chuffing massive.

There’s a new cooling system too, and because the Super Snake-R is supposed to be ‘track-focused’ there’s also fully adjustable suspension, new brakes and a short-throw shifter if you spec the manual gearbox. You’ll get a Borla active exhaust for maximum noise to match the looks, too.

Inside, the rear seats are stripped out and there’s new embroidery on the front seats, many badges and plenty of numbered plaques. Because yes, it is a limited edition, although Shelby hasn’t actually said how many it’ll build in total.

Want one for yourself? You’ll need to stump up at least $224,995, but that does include the base Mustang Dark Horse so technically it’s a bit of a bargain, no?
