The Lucid Gravity SUV looks awesome and has 440 miles of estimated range

Considering how much we dig the Lucid Air sedan, our expectations for the company’s next EV – the Gravity SUV – have been pretty high. And now Lucid has finally pulled the wraps off the Gravity at the Los Angeles auto show this week, well, we definitely like what we see. This SUV looks to have fixed many of the Air’s ergonomic drawbacks while adding a lot more space for passengers and cargo.

The California-based EV maker isn't confirming many of the Gravity's specs just yet, only saying the SUV uses "the next generation of Lucid's proprietary, ultra-compact powertrain technology". 900-volt architecture will allow for fast charging speeds, likely as high as the Air's 300kW. Lucid says the Gravity will be able to accelerate to 60mph in less than 3.5sec, and it can tow 6,000 pounds. Probably not at the same time, natch.

As for the all-important question of range, Lucid is aiming high. Given the company’s track record of putting up incredible real-world mileage, we aren’t surprised. Lucid estimates the Gravity will be able to go at least 440 miles on a single charge. For comparison, that’s over 100 miles more than Tesla’s longest-range Model X. Hot damn.

As for the design, the Gravity doesn’t stray too much from the Air – not that that’s a bad thing. We love how the hatch uses a clamshell design like the Air’s trunk, and the roofline is practically identical between the two vehicles. Lucid says the Gravity has a slippery drag coefficient of 0.24, which makes it incredibly aerodynamic – especially for an SUV.

Inside, the Gravity has three rows of seats for seven-passenger seating, and if you fold both the second- and third-row seats flat, there’s 112 cubic feet of cargo space. That doesn’t include the substantial frunk, either, which can apparently also be used as a place to sit, judging by Lucid’s press photos. The front seatbacks have fold-down tray tables, too, so your kids hopefully won’t spill their Cheesy Gordita Crunches all over the back of your fancy-shmancy SUV.

Up front, there’s a 34-inch curved display spanning most of the dashboard, with a large secondary screen below, housing all of the vehicle’s main functions. This looks like a big improvement over the interface found in the Air sedan – which we’ll admit has gotten better over the years. Lucid will continue to improve its in-car software, of course, and the Gravity will be over-the-air-update capable.

When does the Gravity go on sale? Not for a while, we’re afraid. Lucid says to expect the SUV by late 2024, assuming there are no delays. These initial photos show a Dream Edition launch spec, but if the Gravity is anything like the Air, we could see Pure, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Performance, and even Sapphire versions in the future. That last one sounds particularly interesting. Imagine one of these with three electric motors and 1,234hp. Hubba hubba.

In any case, the base Gravity is expected to start “under $80,000” in the US, according to Lucid. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
