The Ford Maverick Lobo is a new street truck with excellent wheels

Ford pays tribute to the street trucks of old with a new Maverick variant

Published: 01 Aug 2024

This is the new Ford Maverick Lobo, and it looks completely excellent. Here ends this message from TopGear.com.

Although... perhaps a little more information wouldn’t go amiss. You see, Ford is adding the Lobo to the 2025 model year Maverick lineup over in the US. It says that it’s inspired by the ‘lowered truck era that lasted from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s’. It also reckons the Lobo can be a canvas for modern street truck builds.

And yet, from where we’re sitting it looks pretty cool already. It’s lower than the standard Maverick, with new suspension that drops it by nearly 13mm up front and by 28mm at the rear. The roof is subsequently 20mm lower and there’s ‘performance-tuned steering’ to match.

The Lobo is fitted with Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-pot engine that makes 238bhp, and that’s connected to the seven-speed auto gearbox usually found in Europe’s Ford Focus ST. The larger front brakes have been pinched from the ST too, while the twin-clutch, torque vectoring rear drive unit is nabbed from the Bronco Sport.

A new Lobo drive mode is apparently available for use ‘on closed courses’ and Ford likens it to the Mustang’s track mode. There’s better cooling in the Lobo too thanks to the larger radiator and fan from the Maverick's 4K towing package.

And then there are the looks. To give it proper street truck vibes there’s a new boxy front grille, a painted rear bumper and painted side skirts. There’s also a black painted roof and 19in aerodisc-style wheels.

Inside you get Grabber Blue and Electric Lime accent stitching, a ‘graffiti-inspired’ print on the seats and the Lobo name embossed on said seats.

Order books are already open and deliveries will start in early 2025.
